So, we are all members of a ROM site here.
So really, what's your thought on piracy? Do you accept it? Do you hate it? Do you only use it because you can't afford to buy the retail versions of games and software?

And this topic is not limited to just games. Software, music and movies (and porn) are all pirated.
    Let's hear your thoughts.

What? Here too, not just there?

I'm one of those grain of salt in an already salty ocean.
I see it as a case of a two sided story.
It all depends from whose spectacles you are viewing this matter.
One side hates it because it's not generating income they deserve; namely the creator, publisher, government (tax revenue), etc.
The other side likes it because it's cheap, not so heart-aching for buying a cat in a bag, widely available (compared to the limited distribution of legit products), generate income without caring about pre-production cost for those not suppose to deserve, etc.
To cut my rambling short; Let's just say, as a consumer, my scale tips more on the 'LIKE IT' side.

I support piracy mostly.Only when I find reason in supporting a company, I support them by buying their retail versions.Example: I bought Fire Emblem 12 japanese version so as to encourage Nintendo to localise it.
But, in cases, where the company wants to just rip off and milk out as much money as they can from the customers, I giver them my middle finger pose and go for complete piracy.Example: Microsoft.I did not, I am not and I will not buy any of their products unless they revise their distribution philosophy to be on par with modern open-source system of distribution.

in places like in my country India without piracy you dont even have to dream of having Windows in your PC (not that India is nt a developed country its just that we haven't westernized ourselves) here piracy plays its role, 90% of the people use pirated OS, here the original
Win7 ultimate 32bit version costs (Rs11448)=$210 while in us it costs about $179 11448Rs is not a amount that can be spents by average indian to buy a OS so pirated OS's area great help.

    now about a NDS rom
Pokemon white costs here(Rs3000)=$54.93 while in US it justs costs 30$(e bay) thats why people like me download from RomU ??? ???

    so is piracy needed ??

If the software is good, reasonably priced and worth the money to me, I will buy it. (the exception is microsoft software, the one time I did buy some of their software they accused me of lying and told me to buy it again.)

For example, Photoshop is not reasonably priced. However, even if it cost £50 I still would not buy it, because I do not use it enough to justify my £50, therefore it is not worth it to me.
Similarly, if adobe premiere pro cost £100, I would not buy it, because although I would probably use it (assuming I had nothing better), the poor quality of the software does not justify the price.

on the other hand, Sony vegas pro costs about £200, I bought it because it is worth it to me, I use it and it's good quality well made software. If I had not pirated sony vegas 7, I would still be using adobe premiere pro, waiting hours for every render and swearing because of the frequent crashes.

With some things, I buy and pirate. My installed copies of skyrim, and duke nukem forever, are pirated, even though I bought legal copies, because I don't want the DRM crap installed on my machine. Similarly, I run a pirate version of oblivion, because for some inexplicable reason it crashes less than my retail legal copy.

Going by the polls, it seems to be a landslide win for piracy, as expected, lol.

I buy all current gen games to support devs, and I pirate everything else. I have complete rom sets for almost everything ever made up until discs were released, and I'm constantly downloading those to complete them too.

I stopped pirating like a year ago.
Why? If everyone pirates stuff, there won't be new content.

    i pirate...my whole country pirates :p
if i don't download it of the internet myself, i can buy right near my house.
When we go to a cinema, right outside it are people standing selling the current movies for a buck each.
The most i payed for a game in the last 10 years was starcraft 2 wings of liberty which costs 4000 L.L equivalent to $3.66.(cheaper than buying the 8GB dvd which costs twice as much:p)
Very few places sell the unpirated items,(places like virgin).
And ofcourse if you pay 50 dollars for an album and get out to see it sell for 1, you will feel dumb :p

I used to pirate everything, now I only pirate some things. I will pirate every new CS Suite Adobe puts out, I will not pirate Indy games on steam, I will pirate one-off programs I desperately need like a data recovery program, etc, etc.

IMHO EA is the only company whose games we should pirate. Why? Because they've ruined a lot of their franchises with their DLC Crap.

Take for example the SIMs series. The first two iterations of the franchise were good because when you bought an expansion or stuff pack for the game you pretty much get a ton of new content and you get value for your purchase. With The SIMs 3, expansion packs mostly come with coding that activates whatever feature is specific to a particular stuff pack like weather with Seasons or the Supernatural life states with Supernatural. And the bulk of new in game content EA brazenly is selling on the SIMs 3 store as premium DLC. So you do get the bells and whistles when you buy a SIMs 3 expansion pack but the items that utilizes those features are not included :(

And don't get me started with Origin as that system is Satan incarnate :p

Untrue, actually. Many people who pirate eventually end up buying the game they pirated.

I mostly support it. I've pirated a lot of stuff. I've never gotten into legal trouble doing it, so it's fine. I've also bought a game after pirating it, because i liked it so much.

i agree, piracy has made alot of people buy some stuff, i think its a good way to try out and see if you like it. im guessing that is why lately demos or lite versions of games have been released, to give the players some sort of taste, without the need of pirating the game

As most of the NFOs from release groups say, 'Try before you buy'.
That's the main reason piracy started. Sadly, that's not the reason for piracy these days but in the start trying games and applications was the main reason piracy existed.

So yeah, piracy really has made people buy stuff. I pirated CoD, MC and Battlefield. Bought all the Battlefields, Minecraft and two CoDs. Not for multiplayer. Simply because I liked the games.

I retract my last statement. Microsofts latest upgrade screwed me so I couldn't play online, how am I supposed to remember a password/email I made years ago, my live ones were wrong apparently. Screw 'em, I got my 360 flashed today and got Battlefield 3 for free. If they're gonna screw me after I've spent around £4000 on games I'll screw them.
