Dedicated Pyro here, I kick ass with the Flare Gun. I never use the shotgun. You can literally outsnipe Snipers (especially on 2fort) with it and force them back while they heal (fire fucks up their aim). It's even better if you're at long range since you'll do ~100 damage per hit on a burning target.

For your benefit p4tman, make sure the opposing Pyro has a Backburner if you engage with rockets, otherwise pull out that shotgun and/or run like hell. For Demo, use stickies shot behind them.
